Familia Nario Fiesta : Daughters Jennifer & Melissa hosted a party at Jenn's casita attended by all Narios and related friends/family.
A crime was committed, a projectile explosion and a trip by sleight were all unplanned, but a great time was had anyway.
The middle generation had their own after-party antics including Irish dancing (not covered here).
Special mementos for the old foggies were awarded.

Basilica of Our Lady of Altagracia / Higuey Basilica (The Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia) : Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia (Our Lady of Altagracia) is the spiritual mother of the Dominicans. To the Dominicans She's what La Caridad del Cobre is to Cubans and what Our Lady of Guadalupe is to Mexicans. This modern Basilica has a 225 ft high arch, and is constructed mostly of concrete. It was was officially inaugurated by Dr. Joaquin Balaguer on January 21, 1971 which is known as Altagracia day. Each year, thousands visit the Basilica on Altagracia Day, to celebrate the Sabana Battle, a Dominican victory over the French on January 21, 1691. Ironically the Basilica, also known as Higuey Basilica (after the town where it is located) was designed by French architects A. Dunoyer de Segonzac and Pierre Dupre and it replaced the antique sanctuary built back in 1572. The Basilica was declared a Dominican Monument on October 12, 1970, and on the 17th of October of the same year Pope John Paul IV declared it a Minor Basilica. Two years later, on August 15, 1972, the Basilica was declared the Diocese of Salva Leon de Higuey. On September 2002 a color lighting scheme designed to bathe the gray concrete in bright color from sunset to midnight was implemented. The Basilica is surrounded by hundreds of Royal Palms arranged in a geometrical pattern around the structure. The Basilica has a bell tower composed by 45 bronze bells. The entry is bronze coated with 24k gold and blessed in Rome. You can see all these details in this gallery.

Portugal: Oporto (Port) and Duoro River Basin : This is a good gallery to view using the new full screen slideshow button. Oporto also known as Port is the region of northern Portugal where Oporto, Vinho do Porto, or simply Port "wine" comes from. All the famous brands (some of British origins) are located here. This amazingly famous river for wine drinkers is known as the Duero river in Spain and it becomes the Duoro river in Portugal on its way to the ocean. Vines grow along its banks from which Ribera del Duero wines in Spain are made and from which Vinho do Porto is made in Portugal. Ribera del Duero wines can be modest in price ($15) depending on sub-region and house, but can cost well over $500 a bottle (for example Millenium Ribera del Duero from Pesquera). What's amazing is that 10 yrs ago I could buy Ibernoble from Ribera del Duero for $5. Anyway, in Porto, the same Duero river called Duoro in Portugal is the home to great Port. Port comes in different types, the most expensives single Vintage year ports that can cost over one hundred dollars and more. I discovered Port when I lived in London many moons ago. I don't collect it, in fact I've drank many bottles with friends and family at informal parties at home that had I saved them, today each would be worth hundreds. Life is too short, and friends and family more dear than the best wines. These are some snapshots I took when I was lucky to visit Porto with friends and family during a short trip to Portugal. I'd like to comeback with more time on our hands. Porto also has great architecture and bridges. Let me know what you think. Enjoy!

La Habana (Havana) - winter 2007 & 2002 : mi Tio Enrique took and sent me these photos of around the Malecon where I used to walk when I was a kid... La Habana(Havana) is run down, Castro sucks, but there are few sights in the world for me like the Bahia de La Habana.

- WORLD MAP - Geotagged photos are shown on a world map - most are in the USA but many abroad.
- KEYWORDS - FUN - try it -- you get to view photos based on keywords - you can make your own combos
- DATES - photos are viewed by dates -- soso
- HELP - this text.
- SEARCH - search keywords or captions.

Images and videos can be explored and viewed in different ways.
If you have the time & bandwidth view images in slideshow full-screen mode - the images will fill your screen. There are several types of slideshows, different image sizes (small size for small monitors or hugemongeous size for hugemongous monitors). Image size can be picked automatically (we detect browser window size), by resizing your brower or by overriding the size when zoom-in on a photo (small, large, X-Large, etc).

There are many links imbedded in our pages. Links to take you around different locations and links to change the way you see the images. Not all links are underlined, some are in boxes (or buttons), others as text in different colors. Move your cursor around text if you have a question as to what you can click or not. When your mouse is over a link, the pointer will change. The images themselves are links allowing you to zoom in closer.

Groupings
Images and videos are organized by "galleries". These galleries are grouped into "categories". But you can override these groupings. You can view by "keywords" (also called "tag" or "tagging"), date or even search -- all choices are available from the banner at top of this page (and all other pages).

- A Gallery is a group of images/videos - also called Portfolios in other sites. A Category is a group of galleries. And they can be nested one inside the other. These groupings usually refer to an event, place or topic. Example of categories are "People", "Places", and examples of galleries inside these categories are "Portugal" and "Spain". Each of them contains further groupings inside like "Getting wet in Portugal", etc.

- Keywords (also called tags or tagging in other sites) cuts across the entire site. No matter what gallery or category an image is located in, a keyword will yank them out and present them into a grouping made on the spot. For example, if you click on "beach" you will see all images tagged as beach, regardless of what gallery (country) they were taken in.

- Search allows you to look for specific words in descriptions or specific keywords anywhere in the site.

- Date can be tricky. The idea is to display images/videos in chronological timeline - meaning sorted by when they were taken or uploaded (your choice). However not all cameras or archiving software populates the date fields. So you can see a picture saying it was taken on date "x" when it was taken earlier or later than that. Newer images I upload will have the right dates as both my newer cameras and archiving software maintain the date fields.

Customizing Views, Sizing Images and Playing Videos
The initial theme is the default theme.
Click images to view manually or click the different types of slideshows (fullscreen and not) to sit back and view automatically choosing different size images and speeds at will.
There are many theme choices possible. Some themes are classy and elegant, others goofy, dark, bright, monochrome, multi-color, and seasonal.
Explore different theme theme formats and see for yourself. Each format behaves differently, with some similarities.
Depending on the theme chosen, thumbnails are square or not & typically to the left of the screen but at times above or below the images. Some themes have no thumbnails at all.

Click a thumbnail to do a first level zoom-in of that photo. The size of that initial zoom is determined automatically by the size of your screen or your web browser.
Click larger photos to zoom in further -- typically a bit smaller than the browser window so it fits without scrolling.
Click the somewhat cryptic names above the image, "S"(small), "M"(medium), "Large", "XL"(Extra-Large), "X1"(X-Large 1), "X2"(X-Large 2) and "Auto"(auto size) to resize the image as desired.

If the image has a triangle in its center, then it is a video.
Click the triangle (like in YouTube), to play the video in its native size. Which can vary from tiny to fullscreen HD quality (depending on the particular video -- you can not change it).

The brackets < and > surrounding a number are directional arrows (next and back). The number is the image number for that grouping.
Click the left bracket < to go backwards to the previous image.
Click the right bracket > to go forward to the next image.

You can change the look and feel of the site as it is displayed in your browser, and if your browser accepts cookies it will remember those settings when you return.

Viewing Geo (World) Maps
Out of thousands of images, less than 100 are in the world map - the bulk available through the methods described above.
You'll see a Map This! button on our gallery pages and homepage. Click it and have fun!

Voting: Leaving Your Mark or Impacting What other Folks see
In addition to changing how you view the site in your own browser, you can also change the site in a lasting way, that others can see.
For example you can choose which photos are "popular" by voting thumbs up (or down) Popular photos are automatically showcased and grouped together.

To vote, hold the cursor over the photo, wait for the thumbs up or down to show and click the one you want. Only one vote per photo (unless you work for Acorn!).

Popular photos are chosen by viewers... I have favorites of my own include mugshots in black and white. It's fun browsing through the popular photos versus your own or my favorites because they are often so different!

You will also find photos/videos taken by my kids, photographers themselves and by friends and family. I try to give folks credit for their work. Let me know if I missed something.

Speak up!
Another way you can put your stamp on the site is by voicing your opinions. we discussed how you mark a photo "popular" with a thumbs up which you do in anonimity. No one(not even me) will know it was you voted for that photo.

However, if you want to let the world know how you feel about the images, you can rate photos with anywhere from 0 to 5 stars and leave your nickname.
If ratings are not enough... you can leave public comments below any photos for the whole world to see.

You can also subscribe to feeds of this site, that will automatically show you when new photos are added, new galleries etc (your choice).

Prints and Merchandise
If you really like a photo or think someone else will like that photo of you, a place, a friend or family or find it funny or spectacular you can have it printed.

You can buy and order prints of any size and finish from 4x6 to wall size. You can choose multiple finishes, matte, glossy, super-glossy, metalic you can even put it on a canvas for a painted look.
You can make mugs, fridge magnets, buttons, aprons, clocks, coasters, luggage tags, keychains, tiles, etc. I've personally ordered all these things to see the quality for myself and we like the way they look. If you want to see samples, at the bottom of the site there is a link to some samples that the hosting site made.

some of my older cams : I love cameras -- Old cameras, new cameras. My first camera was a Kodak Duoflex II "waist finder" camera. The day I got it (I was about 10-11 yrs old) I took almost 100 shots (96 to be precise) on a trip to the zoo. While I don't have any of those B&W shots handy, I did buy several versions of that (now ancient) camera and will be posting some new shots while I get my stuff together. If you want to see more of these older (pre-2005) cameras click here These cameras are as of 2005, sometime soon I'll post info and pics of my recent arsenal (digital SLR, digital water camera, etc) -- You know what, cameras a photographer do NOT make.
